‘Bigger than Jesus? The Beatles were a Christian band’

There are only a few turns in Beatle history that I have not addressed on this blog.  I guess, John’s comments about the popularity of the Fab Four have never been approached.

Me personally, I like to think of the comment as John making an off-handed remark, and being a braggart.  I don’t think he was thinking before he spoke.  And I certainly don’t think he thought about the ramifications of his comments at all.  I mean, at that time the group really was untouchable.  This was the first real chink in the armor, the cracks in the facade began to appear.  Our loveable group was indeed fallible. 

The Beatles

Here’s what we’ve read.

John Lennon famously claimed the Beatles were more popular than Jesus, even predicting that Christianity would “vanish and shrink”.
But 28 years after his death, in an interview being broadcast for the first time, he claims that on the contrary, he hoped to encourage people to focus on the Christian faith.

Despite his familiar image as a hippy icon who invited us to imagine a world without religion, Lennon says he was “one of Christ’s biggest fans” and felt emotional in church.
