Lennon’s piano goes on peace tour.

Lennon piano (Click for larger image.)It is a bit odd that John Lennon’s piano would go on a promotional peace tour.  But wasn’t it Lennon himself that he doesn’t mind being a clown for peace, and “We’re trying to sell peace, like a product, you know, and sell it like people sell soap.”  Well it looks like his instrument is being used as an instrument not for music, but as an instrument of peace itself.

Its kind of cool to think of Lennon’s piano in terms of inspiring a peaceful message.  I mean wasn’t that what he was all about really?  I think John would have love the play on words, and the message of this tour for peace.  I mean if you can’t always go on tour to promote yourself and your message, who can you send.  It looks like you have to send the instruments themselves.  I wonder if it will visit Kent State University near me?

Here’s what we’ve read.

Given the events that recently unfolded at Virginia Tech University, getting the message of peace out there has never been more important.

The piano that John Lennon wrote the anti violence anthem of the twentieth century on, ‘Imagine’, is currently touring sites of extreme violence in the United States and possibly Europe.

Organiser Caroline True from the Goss Gallery in Dallas, Texas and owners of the priceless Steinway Kenny Goss and George Michael stress that the Tour is not a political statement but a symbolic and quiet gesture of peace.

“We are taking the piano on tour of America and other places in the world were horrific acts of violence have occurred and we’re just basically spreading a very simple message which is peace,” Caroline said.

The piano has already visited the site of Martin Luther King’s assassination in Memphis, Huntsville Texas State Penitentiary where an execution was taking place and the Ford Theatre – the site of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination in Washington D.C. There are also plans to visit Ground Zero at the World Trade Centre in New York, sites of the Rodney King riots in Los Angeles and Columbine High School in Jefferson County, Colorado. It’s also planned to take the piano to Europe with possible sites being the site of Nazi gas chambers at Auschwitz and the underground stations of the 2005 London bombings.

Caroline said that in no way was this a political statement. All she hopes is that the project will touch people’s hearts and make them think about John Lennon’s original message of peace.

“That’s all we want to say – we’re spreading a message of peace, we’re not political or opinionated about any of this, we’re just taking the piano, putting it on the street and getting reaction and the reaction to date has all been incredibly positive.

Caroline said that the Goss Gallery hoped to compile a book of photographs of all of the sites that Lennon’s piano visits. Profit from sale of the books will go to charity.
