Paul and Ringo to finish Lennon song.

It looks like there may be another Lennon/McCartney track on the horizon.  Or will this be a Beatles’ track? The spector of this story just won’t go away, but now they’re reported of Ringo joining in the fray. Or will this be a Beatles’ track?  I remember when the news broke that this was a possibility there was a lot heated discussion among Beatle fans that this could only be dubbe a Beatle track if they used the parts that George Harrison had fleshed out during the Anthology projoect.  I would agree with that estimation.  The recording must contain bits of all four members of The Beatles for it to be called a track by the group.

The only thing that I keep thinking about is the “how” of this track.  I mean the remasters at this point are happening, we all know that. But…how will they release this track?  Will it be the Beatles’ first downloadable single?  Imagine that, a new track by The Beatles available exclusively online.  I wonder, how many casual fans would get truly excited about that?  To all of us hardcore fanatics, this is exciting news.  We get to hear the boys play together again on arguably what may be called one of Lennon’s most bittersweet  tune.  The prospects of that are awesome.  We’ll keep you updated as we hear more.  Hopefully they release this little baby on vinyl 45″ too.  I would like that very much…just wishful thinking in this digital age.

Here’s what we’ve read.

It seems Lennon and McCartney may work together one last time after Yoko Ono gave her blessing for Macca to finish one of John’s songs.

Despite a famously frosty relationship with her husband’s ex-bandmate, Yoko has given the green light for Paul and fellow surviving Beatle Ringo Starr to work on the unfinished song Now And Then, reports the Daily Express.

“It’s up to them,” she told the paper. “But no, I’m not against it.”

The paper reports that Paul had wanted to work on the song when he, Ringo and the late George Harrison got together to work on the Beatles Anthology in the 90s.

Yoko, 73, who owns the copyright to all John’s solo material, has fought with Paul in the past. The pair clashed when Paul wanted to reverse the Lennon-McCartney songwriting credits on one of the most famous Beatles tracks, Yesterday.

  1. i doubt that it wont be released on vinyl… every single by the beatles has.
but download exclusive for a few months… does also sound like something they would do. maybe this will be the forst beatles song we see in the itunes music store. and if it is being released on vinyl… you can bet im gonna grab one up as fast as i can! i already preordered my “LOVE” vinyl set too =).

  2. Oh, happy day, if for even a fake reunion, this is great news! I loved the extra anthology tracks, and even wish Paul would go so far as to “finish off” an entire album of John demos, and make it a Lennon/McCartney collaboration! Thanks for posting!

  3. You say, ” The recording must contain bits of all four members of The Beatles for it to be called a track by the group.” That is a ridiculous criteria don’t you think? The Beatles released a lot of songs under the Beatle name in the 60s that feature no more than one or two Beatles. Why are you making up new rules? Below is a list of 21 official Beatles tracks that I guess you don’t consider Beatles tracks at all. Paul and Ringo could release a brand new album tomorrow under the Beatles banner. Would it be the Beatles? Of course it would be. It’s up to them to call it what they want not YOU.

  4. I would say that in this case that all four would have to play on the track. Otherwise it would simply be a Lennon song that McCartney and Ringo plays on. I know there are songs throughout The Beatles’ career that not all of them played on. But with this being a post-breakup track it would only seem proper that all four members play on this track for it to qualify as a “Beatles” track as a whole….

Again, this is just my humble opinion. I am not changing any rules or anything…it’s just my lowly opinion.

  5. I for one hope that they leave george’s guitar parts in.noone else including clapton could do it justice. besides without george’s part olivia would veto it, and she would have that right since she owns a fourth of the fabs.make it a single or put it on a new greatest hits cd.this song is so anticipated by so many i hope wer’e not let down by just not releasing it.

  6. Matt,

My opinion is humble and lowly as well. I’ve definitely heard a lot of fans express the same viewpoint as you. I still don’t get it, especially because it narrows the possibilities for a whole lot of great music. If all four Beatles have to be on it to make the song a real Beatles song then there is not too much new Beatles music that can be done.

Let’s suppose that Paul and Ringo DID decide to record an entire new Beatles album by themselves. It opens up so much more creative freedom for them. They wouldn’t have to be weighed down with using old demos and unfinished songs. They could do something truly brand new and fresh. The Who released an album recently with just Pete and Roger. Why can’t the Beatles? The only criteria I would have for such a project would be whether or not the music they produced together was up the bands previous high standards. If Paul and Ringo could pull that off with a little help from Julian, Eric Clapton or just the two of them, then why not? As long as it was a great album then they should be allowed to do it. Let’s face it, John and George are gone. Paul and Ringo aren’t getting any younger. Why not record something brand new? The skies the limit then.

Unfortunately, they probably won’t do it because so many fans feel exactly the way that you do. I would guess that if Beatle fans weren’t so strict with what they consider to be a true Beatles recording, we would have gotten a lot more than “Free as a Bird” and “Real Love” by now. A truly brand new Beatles album is long overdue.

  7. Matt, I would say, You have taken me for a nice ride 🙂
Just going thru ur write up, i just cant help myself from going on to that New Beatles album trip with Paul,Ringo,Eric and Julian. A band that could be rated just next to the Beatles original line up.
I totally agree with you and sometimes wonder why such simple things has to be so made so difficult. Its just getting together and jam. If paul and ringo is not having any ego trips then i dont think it will be hard to persuade Eric, atleast to fill Georgie’s place.
Well Julian wont ignore to Paul in anyway. At the same time it will be a break of his life.
I certainly beleive that Paul can come up with simple Beatlesque melody and if we miss John’s sarcastic ones that Eric might do justice and yah! julian is there for the vocals.
Well…the legal part, I have the least of knowledge and if the Onos can just sit quitely and enjoy, it cud be possible.
well…This is what Paul used to sing 40 yrs back…………..
    “Will you still need me
    Will you still feed me
    When I’m sixty four”………
Well Dear Paul, Its perfect time and you are 64 now. Sure we will feed you and we desparetely need u.

    thanks Matt 🙂

  8. correction pls…
It was for you Tony 🙂
    thanks

  9. Has anyone thought about this scenario…since new music by the “Beatles” is afoot..
let’s see……two Lennon son’s, Dhani Harrison, James McCartney, Zak starkey…..so could this be a project of sorts?….not saying a Beatles thing but…these offspring have produced quite a bit of music on their merit….Whaddya think?????

  10. interesting i shud say.
well julian might feel a bit outtaplace.
havent heard much abt James Mccartney?
sean and dhanni are quite compatible.
zak starr is already a star with oasis.
I just dont understand why they are not thinking abt things like that.
Not only will it do justice to a lots of beatles fan but also earn them a fortune.
Beleive me, the beatles still sells.
I just wish something like this comes out

  11. Whether anybody might like to hear my opinion, I feel this “new” single is just commercial stuff. I bet everyone of you has listened to the demo… it doesn’t sound that fantastic, does it? Moreover, it seems like Paul waited for George to be dead to work on this song, just because he wasn’t keen on it.

Anyway… I am very happy there might be a new beatles single, however put up, and be sure I’ll be the first to buy it!

    Move up, Paul and Ringo!

  12. I have been hoping since 95 when it was not on anthology three that this song would be released I hope so ! to those who are not keen why try and put it down for those of us who want it,who would enjoy don’t rain on my parade I really want this song if you can’t appreciate it don’t listen while you grumble the rest of the world can smile as to how the finished product will sound how would you know? youre not involved ,lots of crappy lennon demos ended up being great records, thats factual on the other hand your judging a record before you even hear it speaks volumes ,go ruin something else but please not the final beatle song what kind of an idiot would want to ruin that?

  13. In response to Ray, I have thought of that exact scenario. Although I had pictured it without Sean because he has tried to form his own image, independent of his father’s.

  14. […] had heard earlier reports that this song my be an exclusive, download only, track once the Beatles catalog gets onto […]

  15. I hope they do release it, how cool would that be? why not?

    I love them.

    Let them Be!!

  16. Ringo plays on almost all of the Beatles Songs w/drums including “why don’t we do it in the road”, but not on Dear Prudence, Back in the USSR, Ballad of John & Yoko, With In Yuo Without You and one of the love Me Do versions! “J”

  17. Oh my god!!! This is so exciting! I love the Beatles and it would bw truly AMAZING if Ringo and Paul recorded an album together!! I really hope they will!!

  18. Dear Blogger,

“Beatles Yoga” is the title of a blog I just posted that draws connections
between the lyrics of the Beatles and the higher consciousness insights of
Yoga. I wrote it in response to the concert Paul and Ringo did in April at
Radio City Music Hall in New York as a benefit for meditation.

I’d be happy to post this 750-word piece as a guest blogger. Would
    you like that?

    Sincerely,

    Cary Bayer
