Iceland gets Yoko Ono peace tower.

This seems like a really nice thing.  Some of Yoko’s schemes seem pretty out there but this one seems like a nice gift to the world.  Too bad it’s in Iceland…I possibly, quite probably, will never see it.

Yoko Ono, the widow of John Lennon, celebrated Monday what would have been the late Beatle’s 66th birthday with a groundbreaking ceremony for a peace monument she will construct in Iceland’s capital.

Imagine Peace Tower, as planned by the 73-year-old artist, will be 20 to 30 meters high with a radius of about a meter, and will have the lyrics of Lennon’s song “Imagine” engraved on it once completed by his 67th birthday next year.

The illuminated column, constructed over a base with a radius of about 10 meters, will be filled with messages of wishes and hopes from more than 900,000 people that have been collected so far.

A special mailbox for the monument will be set up in the city to continue accepting more letters to go into the monument.

  1. May Pang wrote on her MySpace blog that she was in Iceland as well… she and Yoko made ‘peace’ with each other, as it were.

  2. it would have been Johns’ 67th birthday!

  3. What a wonderful creation for a place of contemplation and imagination.
This will be a time when and a place where, all of us will journey back with our many sullied thoughts as we attempt to grapple with our combined stupidities and regrets, of times, places and persons missed and longed for.
Let us forever let this place be a reminder from John, to never again let stupidity cause us to lose our opportunity to embrace peace, wherever we are.
A marvellous gift from Yoko to allow us to rejoin with John and imagine.

  4. well, you could just as well travel to us ( Iceland ) as we to you ;D
