Williamsburg host dusts off Beatles’ talk.

See, that’s what the world needs.  We need more interview clips that were lost.  Maybe, once Apple gets all things straightened out, and the albums are remastered, they can put exclusive downloads to more interviews like this one on the Beatles website.  I would pay a few bucks to download some of these interviews.  How cool would that be?

If anyone manages to catch this interview snippet on the radio or the net, let me know, I’d love to hear it.

Sandy Lesberg is quick to say that his 15-minute interview with The Beatles wasn’t really an interview at all.

“It was more like a rap session,” the Williamsburg radio show host explained. “All four Beatles were completely at ease. I tell a joke and Paul McCartney says, ‘I don’t think that’s very funny.’ There’s a lot of banter. I say, ‘George, I didn’t mean to wake you up.’ He sort of grunts. They were running roughshod all over me, quite frankly … We’re running it now because I think people would like to hear it.”

The 81-year-old host of the weekly “Sandy Lesberg’s World” on WCWM-FM (90.9) encountered the Fab Four in 1965 on the set of the movie “Help!” in Twickenham, England. At the time, he was host of a talk show on New York’s WOR-AM (710). The recording aired soon after but, over time, was lost to everyone except the most obsessive Beatles fans.

Lesberg left WOR in the 1980s and spent nearly two decades living in Europe. About three years ago, he returned to this country and settled in Williamsburg. One of his children used the Internet and the Google search engine to track down a recording of the Beatles session.

Now, Lesberg is eager to share it with local listeners.

“Sandy Lesberg’s World” is taped before an audience each Friday at the Williamsburg Library Theatre. At the theater today at noon, the host will introduce and play the clip as part of his show. The taping is free and open to the public. The program will then air at 5 p.m. on WCWM, at 6 p.m. on WMBG-AM (740) and on WYOU-FM (100.9) at 11 a.m. Saturday. WYOU streams its broadcasts at http://www.wyou.fm.

Patrick Golden, program services director for the library, has heard the tape. “It’s almost like listening to a Marx Brothers routine,” he said. “They still have a lot of that boyish charm that captured people’s imaginations.”

The Beatles aren’t typical fare for “Sandy Lesberg’s World,” but it’s possible he’ll move the program in more of a pop culture direction.

“My show’s a Williamsburg thing,” Lesberg said. “We talk politics, books, local stuff, international stuff. But if the Beatles draw some interest, I think I’ll be able to dig through the archives for more of this kind of thing. In New York, I used to interview heads of state, movie stars … Michael Caine is a good friend of mine.”

The Williamsburg Library Theatre is located at 515 Scotland St. For more information, call 259-4071.
