You know there are times that I've heard great singers voices sound off as they age...two of them are Paul McCartney & Paul Simon. I saw a Paul Simon show July 4th, 2006 and he was just perfect throughout, but saw other clips from the same tour that were hit & miss. The album he was touring on, "Surprise" (as of right now, it is still my favorite album of the decade, bar none) had perfect vocals.
Macca is similar. I've heard great, and pretty off things from him live recently. But...in the studio he still sounds pretty perfect to these ears. I think the way his voice sounds is a stylistic choice here, and not the result of aging and the limitations imposed by that process. I really dig this song, but a track I dig even more is the recent single by his alter ego, "The Fireman". If you have any doubts about his voice I guess I could dig up some of the positive recent live performances, but instead I'd direct anyone to the powerhouse performance of the following breathtakingly amazing track @:

Paul's voice worries me a bit. It's alraight as long as it's rough around the edges, it kind of suits his age. But if he really loses his voice and starts to sound pitiful I hope he stops singing. Remember Sinatra and Pavarotti, those great singers, they wouldn't admit to themself that their voice were gone and just kept on doing concerts, singing like 25 year olds. It just sounded dreadful. Paul is doing pop music and doesn't have to be singing techically great, and that can work in his favour though, bringing a certian raw feeling to his songs, that wasn't there before. Time will tell. I hope he can go on making records for years to come, Paul is a pioneér, whatever he does in the future, in rock/pop, nobody has done it before. In the 60's these guys didn't think they could do it past 30 years old. McCartney is 66, still going strong, making great music.
